5.24.22 Recap No Frame

NEW YORK, NY. -The second round series between Carolina and New York will return to Raleigh tied at 2-2 after the Rangers picked up a 4-1 win Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Three Things

1) The MVP Candidate Does It Again
While the Canes didn't reach 44 shots like they did on Sunday, they still found ways to get pucks onto Igor Shesterkin. The issue was that he was just as difficult to beat than he was in Games 2 & 3.
The Hart & Vezina Trophy nominee turned away 30/31 when all was said and done, facing 12 high-danger chances from the Canes. (Info via NaturalStatTrick.com.)
Tonight was the third game of the series Shesterkin has allowed just one goal, now having allowed just a grand total of four goals on 122 shots.
2) Losing The Special Teams Battle
Carolina entered Game 4 0/7 on the power play. Tonight they went 0/2, moving their series-long drought to nine unsuccessful attempts.
Now just 11.6% on the man advantage in the postseason, the Canes were also chasing the game after New York was able to capitalize on a first period man advantage of their own for a second straight affair.
3) History For Fishy
The lone goal that the Canes did score came during the third period after their forecheck caused a turnover that led to an abbreviated two-on-one chance for Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen.
Teravainen put home the feed, giving Aho his fifth assist and ninth point of the postseason. That now gives him 44 points in 45 games with the Canes for his career, making him the team's new all-time leader in playoff assists and points.
He passed Ron Francis for the setups record and Eric Staal for the most points.

They Said It

Rod Brind'Amouron the team not finishing on their chances, but also giving New York's netminder praise for his efforts once again...
"What're you going to do? You have to keep getting the chances. I'm happy that we're creating offense. [Igor Shesterkin] played well. You have to give him a ton of credit. But the [poor] start is what did it to us."
Sebastian Ahowhen asked if facing Shesterkin and the accolades that come with him are setting into the minds of the Hurricanes...
"No. To be honest, I don't really pay attention to who is in net and think of how I can create more chances against them. I look at it more like how can we create the best chances? Sometimes the best ones are rebounds, quick one-timers. It's not always going to be bar down on the rush. You just have to find ways to put the puck in the back of the net."
Jordan Staalproviding his thoughts on what the Canes need to do to start scoring more goals...
"More traffic, more shots, more second chances. Give them credit, they obviously do a good job of staying in shooting lanes and boxing guys out in front. We have to get grittier and get harder around the net. We have to get to those tough areas if we're going to put the puck in the back of the net."

What's Next?

The Canes fly back to Raleigh immediately post-game. They are scheduled to hold a full team practice on Wednesday. Game 5 will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at PNC Arena.
