Thanksgiving provides an important mile-marker in the National Hockey League's regular season.
Why?
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, since the 2005-06 season, over three-quarters of teams in a playoff position on Thanksgiving have ultimately qualified for the postseason.
The Hurricanes slot in at the Eastern Conference's top wild card position this Thanksgiving. And, while we're on the topic of standings, let's take a peek at the latest collection of power rankings.

"Andrei Svechnikov has an eight-game point streak (five goals, seven assists) and leads the Hurricanes with 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists) despite being ninth on Carolina in average ice time per game (16:34)."
NHL.com's power ranking system compiles top-16 lists from 13 staff writers in order to amalgamate a ranking consensus. Among these lists, the Hurricanes ranked as high as 5 (Mike G. Morreale), as low as 12 (Mike Zeisberger) and everywhere right around their 7th ranking (6, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9).

"This is just a good team that's on the right track again. But this is a lot like a mirror image of Chicago last year: Winning streaks follow losing streaks follow winning streaks. This year they've won five straight, lost one, won one, lost three straight, won three straight, lost four straight, now this. Pick a lane, fellas!"

"Thankful for Andrei Svechnikov and Dougie Hamilton's friendship off the ice and their contributions on the ice. Svechnikov and Hamilton rank first and third on the Hurricanes with 27 and 25 points."
