Capitals Alumni, Broadcasters to Participate in WAFF Ice House

Capitals alumnus Peter Bondra, alumnus and NBC Sports Washington (NBCSW) color analyst Craig Laughlin and NBCSW Capitals play-by-play announcer Joe Beninati will participate in a sit-in at an ice house to benefit the Washington Area Fuel Fund (WAFF) in January sponsored by Washington Gas and The Salvation Army. Bondra will participate on Thursday, Jan. 18, from 2 to 3 p.m., and Laughlin and Beninati will participate on Friday, Jan. 19, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Washington Harbour in Washington, D.C.

WAFF, which helps families, seniors, veterans, and others in need pay for their winter heating bills, is partnering with Ice Lab to build the house, made of 60 large blocks of ice. By sitting in the Ice House, participants will raise awareness for the fuel fund and raise money to help keep the heat on this winter for thousands of homes throughout the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

The Ice House will be open from Jan. 18-20 with hours of sitting scheduled for 2-8 p.m. on Thursday, 2-9 p.m. on Friday, and 12-9 p.m. on Saturday.

All proceeds benefit WAFF, which is a 35-year partnership between Washington Gas and The Salvation Army. Washington Gas covers all administrative costs for the fuel fund so that all donations can go to those in need. The Salvation Army distributes funds through its 12 offices in the metropolitan region. Since 1983, WAFF has distributed more than $26 million to warm more than 286,000 families during the winter and covers every type of utility heating bill.
