TORONTO - The Carolina Hurricanes fell behind 2-1 in their First Round series against the Boston Bruins after a 3-1 loss in Game 3, but potentially more concerning is the status of Andrei Svechnikov.
With about four-and-a-half minutes left in regulation, Svechnikov and Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara were jostling for position in front of Jaroslav Halak when Chara knocked Svechnikov to the ice. As the Canes' sophomore star fell, his right leg bent awkwardly under him. He clutched his lower leg before being helped off the ice by Dougie Hamilton and head athletic trainer Doug Bennett.
Head coach Rod Brind'Amour didn't have any further update to pass along after the game.
"I know he's getting looked at right now," he said. "He fell really awkward. It certainly didn't look good. We'll know more at some point."
The atmosphere after the loss was, understandably, melancholy enough, a sullen mood only exacerbated by the loss of Svechnikov, who leads the team in goals (4) and ranks second in points (7) through six postseason games.
"Right now it's tough because you see a kid go down, and that injury looks really bad. That's all that's going through my head," Brind'Amour said. "I hate it for him."
